The 747.
BRAVE Luke Bowen is hoping for an injury-free season following two years of
pain and worry, writes John Hutchinson. Bowen was involved in a horrific incident in 2006 whilst riding for Rye House in
which he badly broke his leg and two bones in his back. He was catapulted some 50 yards from his bike, yet unbelievably
remained consciousness throughout the terrifying event. The Harlow-born rider was sidelined for most of that campaign,
and although he returned the following season, his leg still contained metal rods following the operation.
As he looks towards the 2008 opener, he feels he can now put the injuries
behind him, having only recently had the metal rods removed. Nicknamed the 'Bowen 747', the 22-year-old is hoping to spread
his wings and add a few points to his average. He said: "Even last year the injury played on my mind. "I still had
the metalwork in my leg, and did feel it was a distraction to my progress. "I was actually advised not to race again for
some time, but couldn't resist coming back to perform. "This year, however, I am confident I can improve and be an asset
for the team." The Rockets will be keen to defend their title as Premier League champions, and Luke is up for the challenge. He
said: "We are all well up for winning the title once again, and with the chance of promotion, it's an exciting time for all
the boys.
